Euthanasia and Dracula
by Stephanie Millard (all rights reserved 2010)
Euthanasia and Dracula examines the scientific and social aspects of releasing souls from the bodies of the dying by juxtaposing it to the potential release of the soul of the vampire when it is staked. In the novel Dracula this action was performed five times. First when Lucy -- as a practicing vampire -- was slain in her crypt in England, then the three brides of Dracula were slain (souls released), and finally Dracula himself is slain. Euthanasia completed. This rather brilliant paper was produced by one of my students in a research paper class. It opens ground that, to my knowledge, is previously unexplored. Note that I have encouraged her to submit this paper to academic journals, and if it is accepted, it vanishes from my Website. So, enjoy. I have attached it here in PDF format. If you don't have a PDF reader, they are free to download.
