Supernatural Study Guide Polidori's "The Vampyre" and Byron's "Augustus Darvell"
John Polidori’s novella “The Vampyre”
was the first vampire story produced in English. It was written for an audience hungry for gothic horror. Thought at that time to have been written by Lord Byron, it took society by storm. It firmly moved the vampire from the graveyard zombie-like revenant to the rakish desirable upper-class rake. It was based upon Byron’s “Fragment of a Novel (usually known as) “Augustus Darvell.” This Study Guide places the two handily side-by-side for comparison purposes.
