Characteristics of Vampires in Story, Film, and Poem

Vampire characteristics as they are written in the stories, myths, folklore, and poems of our cultures demonstrate all sorts of morphing ability. While these vampires all have some things in common, among perhaps the most important -- that they used to be human (like we are) and aren't quite human anymore -- it is interesting to see the shift in how authors choose to represent this undead previously-human character. To see how this mythical character has passed through life into death and back to literary life carrying the varying expectations of the cultures which created the myth is fascinating, and would be a great conference table presentation or round-table discussion.

While it is interesting enough to simply read the poems, stories, and novels which appear here and elsewhere, doesn't your mind crave some sort of comparison? Mine does. Which is why this is here!
I am tracking only those works that have been translated into English (I am certain many exist that haven't yet made this transition).

Below are three links, the first to vampire characteristics as they appear in pre-Dracula stories and poems, while the second links to a short (but growing list) of what we see in modern lit. The third takes you to a discussion of the characteristics of vampires in children's novels and comics.
